When it comes to outstanding midsize crossover SUVs, consumers across the region of Belle Fourche, Sioux Falls, and Rapid City, SD, want the very best in power, performance, technology, and luxury features. They want a vehicle that will get them where they need to go around town and that can handle difficult road and weather conditions.

For years, Jeep and Ford have been the leaders in performance when it comes to sport utility vehicles. Both have long legacies, stretching back to the beginning of the SUV sector. Which one, however, is the better when put side by side? Let's look at a direct side-by-side comparison of the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs. Ford Edge in a battle of midsize crossovers, and learn where you can drive the winner.

2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Ford Edge: Engine Lineup and Power

The Ford Edge is equipped with a choice of three engines. The first is an EcoBoost® four-cylinder that puts out 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. Next up is a 3.5-liter V6 which gives you 280 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. Finally, the very top range engine is a 2.7-liter V6 which delivers 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft.

Unfortunately, that doesn't even come close to what you get from the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which not only offers more engines, but more powerful engines at every level. Even at the base level, you get a 3.6-liter V6, which is capable of 295 horsepower with 260 lb-ft of torque. That's way more than the Ford base engine and even better than the mid-range Ford.

From there it gets even better, stepping up to a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 (240 horsepower, 420 lb-ft of torque), a 5.7-liter V8 (360 horsepower, 390 lb-ft of torque), a 6.4-liter V8 (475 horsepower, 470 lb-ft of torque), or a massive supercharged 6.2-liter V8 (707 horsepower, 645 lb-ft of torque) at the top Trackhawk trim.

2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee vs Ford Edge: Off-Roading

If you're looking for power and performance, the Jeep Grand Cherokee offers the Trailhawk® trim level, which is completely decked out for trailblazing. Not only does it combine outstanding technology in Jeep's Quadra-Lift® suspension, Quadra-Drive® II selectable terrain control, and Quadra-Trac® II 4WD system, but it adds off-road tuning, along with hill descent and ascent control. Add underbody plates to protect your undercarriage, and you've got the class-leading off-road vehicle.

What about Ford? There is no off-road-oriented trim level for the Edge at all. It also doesn't come with true 4WD; it comes only with the Ford AWD system. It's fine for dealing with gravel or tough road conditions, but if you're looking for the best in off-road capability, it simply doesn't match up.
